Expanding Access to Voting Page

Assemblyman Magnarelli strongly supports making it easier for Central New Yorkers to exercise their right to vote. The Assemblyman supports the following measures that passed the Assembly in 2018 to protect and expand the right to vote. Click on the legislative bill number to be linked to more information.

Early Voting: (A.9608), establishes 7 days of early voting in New York

  • * Requires counties provide 1 early polling place for every 50,000 registered voters, up to a maximum of 7 required sites per county. Counties may establish additional sites if they chose.
  • * Requires that early voting sites be opened at least 8 hours on weekdays with at least 2 days offering evening hours, and requires that sites be open for 5 hours a day on weekends and holidays. Counties would be free to adjust polling hours beyond that to meet local needs.
  • * Counties can also establish early voting sites for specific areas of the county as long as every county voter has at least 1 polling place open to them.

Online Voter Registration: (A.5382), allows people to register to vote online.

“No Excuse” Absentee Voting: (A.7623), amends the State Constitution to allow voters to request an absentee ballot for any reason.

Closing the “LLC Loophole”: (A.9758), eliminates the loophole in the Election Law that treats LLCs as individuals allowing large corporations to make nearly unlimited contributions to a candidate.
